AFTERWARD, MY WHOLE body relaxed against the heat-baked lounge chair. I couldn’t believe what I had just done. In front of Will. I knew all about Jen going down on him in her garden—and the thought of the two of them together made me feel queasy and jealous—but it sounded like he was the one to pull away from her. I stared up at the sky, shielding the sun with my hands, and heard the scrape of Will’s chair.

I rolled on my side to find him inches away from me.

“You’re beautiful, Cynthia,” he said, tracing a finger down my leg. “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful in my life.”

I thought he was going to lean over and kiss me just then, but instead, he stood. “Like I said, we’ll take this slow. But I’ll see you soon.”

And before I could respond, he was heading over to the gate, unlatching it, and letting himself out.
